Are SKF, FAG, NSK and NTN bearings interchangeable?
Short answer: dimensionally, almost always yes; in service, it depends. A 6204 is built to the same ISO 15 boundary dimensions — 20 mm bore, 47 mm outside diameter, 14 mm wide — whether it says SKF, FAG, NSK, NTN, Koyo or Nachi on the box. That is what a cross-reference gives you: the part that drops into the same shaft and housing. But "fits the same hole" and "does the same job" are two different promises, and the gap between them is where replacements fail early.
What is genuinely standardised
The boundary dimensions — bore, outside diameter, width, and the chamfer limits — are fixed by ISO standards (ISO 15 for radial ball and roller bearings, ISO 355 for metric tapered, and so on). Every reputable manufacturer builds to them. That is why the core designation is portable: a 6204 from any of these brands mounts in the same seat. So the envelope is safe to cross. The differences all live inside that envelope, and in the letters after the number.

The suffix trap
The most common cross-reference mistake is matching the number and ignoring the letters. A sealed 6204 is written 6204-2RS1 by SKF, 6204DDU by NSK, 6204-2RSR by FAG, 6204LLU by NTN and 6204-2RS by Koyo — the same closure, five different codes. Miss it and you can order an open bearing where the machine needs a sealed one, or a contact seal where the design needed the lower friction of a shield. The five checks before you cross a brand
- Clearance. CN (normal) is assumed if unmarked, but a machine specified for C3 needs C3 in the replacement too — the wrong clearance can seize a same-size bearing. See CN, C3, C4 explained.
- Seal / shield. Match the closure by function (open, shielded, contact-sealed), then translate the brand suffix.
- Precision. Normal class is interchangeable; a P5/P6 or noise-graded bearing is not the same as a standard one.
- Cage. A brass or polyamide cage variant behaves differently at high speed or temperature than the pressed-steel default.
- Ratings line. Standard vs a brand's premium line (SKF Explorer, FAG X-life, NSK's high-performance series) changes the rated life even at identical dimensions.
These are the same five checks behind what "interchangeable" really means — the point of a cross-reference is to make them easy, not to let you skip them.
Premium lines: same size, different bearing
Most brands sell a standard catalogue bearing and an upgraded line in the same envelope. The upgraded version uses cleaner steel and optimised internal geometry to raise the dynamic load rating, which raises calculated life for the same load. Crossing a standard bearing for a premium one of the same number is safe mechanically but changes the economics; crossing a premium one down to a standard bearing quietly shortens the life the machine was designed around.
A word on counterfeits
The most-searched sizes — 6204, 6205, 6206, 6203 — are also the most counterfeited. A fake carries the right number and the right dimensions but unknown steel, heat treatment and grease, so none of the checks above hold. If a "premium brand" bearing is priced like a generic one, treat the number on it as meaningless. Buy from the manufacturer's authorised channels when the application matters.
